Hill City

Hill City is a great destination for the whole family. Located 33 minutes southwest of Rapid City on Highway 385, this mountain town is just 12 miles from Mount Rushmore.

Over one thousand residents claim "Heart of the Hills" home. This nickname was given to Hill City and rings true because of its close proximity to both the geographical center of the Black Hills and the nearby tourist destinations like Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park and Crazy Horse Monument.

While the current city was established as part of the mining rush, today it is considered a center for the arts featuring several art studios and festivals. Timber and telecommunications are also import industries in the area but the community largely caters to the thousands of travelers that enjoy the areas activities, attractions and natural beauty.

When visiting Hill City, you'll want to check out the Black Hills Central Railroad 1880 Train and the Black Hills Institute Museum. If interested in a trip on the rails check the 1880s Train schedule. Then we suggest grabbing a bite at the Hill City Café, Desperados, Bumpin Buffalo or one of the many others. And of course no trip to Hill City is complete without a few a local wine tastings at the Prairie Berry, Naked Winery, Stone Faces and others just east of the city limits.
