The Crazy Horse Memorial is a mountain monument under construction depicting the Oglala Lakota warrior, riding a horse and pointing into the distance.
Crazy Horse was a Lakota war leader who lived in the 19th century (1840 - 1877). He fought against encroachment by white American settlers on Native American territory and worked to preserve the traditional Lakota way of life.
Crazy Horse Memorial is in the Black Hills and located at 12151 Avenue of the Chiefs, Crazy Horse, SD 57730, just 5.3 miles north of Custer, SD along Hwy. 385. Crazy Horse Memorial is 16.1 miles southwest of Mount Rushmore National Memorial and 37.1 miles from Rapid City.

The carving of the Crazy Horse statue is a story in itself. Korczak Ziolkowski, a Polish-American sculptor was commissioned by Henry Standing Bear, a Lakota elder to carry out the monumental undertaking. Ziolkowski began sculpting Crazy Horse on May 3, 1947.
Today, it is operated by the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit organization and is open year round. When visiting make sure to enjoy a number of unique educational opportunities.
At the main entrance is the Visitor Complex. Visitors are invited to an orientation film in Twin Theaters and can check out the Indian Museum of North America, Bison exhibit, Sculptor's studio-home, bronze statues, 1860's Conrad Coach and more. In season you may see American Indian Artists creating artwork and crafts. Then stick around for the laser light show at dark.
