More than 15 years ago, Dave and Patty Ressler fell in love with the area and never left. Today, Custer is Dave's World Tours headquarters and where we call home.
Custer is widely accepted as the oldest city settled by European Americans in the Black Hills area. For thousands of years before, the Black Hills territory was home to numerous indigenous tribes. In 1875 aspiring gold miners, many of them civil war vets trespassed and established a settlement. They called it Stonewall. Stonewall the town was later renamed for General Custer and has retained the name ever since.
The highest city in the Black Hills, Custer is over a mile high, ensuring it is the coolest city in the Black Hills area during the summers and warmest in the winters.
Black Hills Parks, Monuments, Attractions & More
On your way to Custer, you'll be treated to a variety of scenic roads and have an opportunity to see a variety of native wildlife. Deer, coyotes, and hundreds of different birds are prevalent in the area. If you're looking for a wild but true story about the local predators ask your Tour Guide about the "Custer Wolf" who was held responsible for the deaths of ranchers' livestock and eluded professional hunters for nine years.
Once in town, you may be interested in checking out the first courthouse in the Dakota Territory or an exhibition of Custer's first encampment. Our drivers will work with the group and make sure you get to see everything on your list.
